Confused on how to buy a Ghillie Suit?

If you’ve come to this page you are probably as confused as I was when I was purchasing my first ghillie suit. All these different type of ghillie suits, all the different names, styles and sizes.
Well, I have probably seen and worn every ghillie suit out there. I have certainly worn every ghillie suit that we sell in our store.
So hopefully this article will be clear up the confusion and help you choose the ghillie suit that you want.
One piece ghillie suits
Let’s start with the one piece ghillie suits out there. One piece ghillies suits are long pullover suits with hoods. These suits are built on a 3/4″ netting, not the micro mesh netting. These suits have no zippers. so to put them on you have to pull the whole thing over your head. They also do not have separate pants legs, so they are not designed for any type of crawling movements. There are slits on both sides going from the hip to the ankles so you can walk and run in them. Since these suits do not have an additional fine mesh platform underneath, they are somewhat cooler than their two piece counterparts.
The four suits below are all made on this platform. The differences in the suit is the camoflage material that is tied to the netting.

So you can see now that if you like the Ghillie Flage, but would like a synthetic suit, you can just get the Ultra Light 1pc, are also called the Ultra Light Long Jacket. The Bow Hunter suit is the same as the Ghillie Flage except that portions of the suit are jute free to enable the bow operation. The Chameleon has synthetic camo leaves instead of thread.
These suits come in two sizes only. Don’t be fooled into thinking there are more sizes. It’s basically a tall and short size.
Two Piece Ghillie Suits
Two piece ghillie suits are jacket and pants combos. The suits below are all built on the same jacket and pants platform. The jacket features an attached hood and a fully zippered front with overlapping flap. The cuffs on the sleeves feature elastic band and the hood has a zip cords. The waist also has a draw string to cinch the suit to your body. The pants feature drawstring ties at the waist and cord locks and elastic cuffs at the ankles.

The 3/4″ netting is sewn onto these fine mesh jacket and pants and the camoflage material is tied to the 3/4″ netting.
The three suits below are all built on this type of jacket and pants platform. Again, the only difference amongst the three is the type of camoflage material attached to the jacket and pants.
I’ve included two pictures of the Ultra Light 2pc because many companies use both images and they are the same product.
Again, there are only two sizes for these suits. To give you an idea, I am 5′11″ 150lbs and a M/L is slightly baggy on me. This is fine because you have to wear some clothes under these suits.
What about the other suits?

The Camosystems Jackal Suit is a two piece suit made on a very high quality lightweight jacket and pants. This suit’s camoflage material is very different than the other suits. It does not use any type of thread, but instead uses a combination of 3D netting and synthetic straps.
The Lightweight Ghillie Suit is a two piece suit based on a super soft micro mesh jacket and pants. This material is so soft that you can wear it with just a t-shirt or even no shirt underneath. Yes, it’s that soft!
The 4pc Ghillie Suit consists of a pullover jacket, pants with drawstring, a separate hood and a rifle wrap. It is based on a 3/4″ netting like the one piece ghillie suits above. There is no zippered front.
The Kids Ghillie Suit consists of a pullover jacket, pants with drawstring, a separate hood and a rifle wrap. It is essentially a small version of the 4pc Ghillie Suit.
I hope this helps you select the right suit for you. If you have any questions or would like questions answered about a particular suit, please ask it in the comment section.

I am doing a report on snipers and there equiptment I just have a few questions to throw out there.
what is the difference between the millitary self made suits and the kind you can find in the stores for hunting in?
I am a hunter myself and i have used a ghillie suit and the only problem I came across is that it was catching on every sticker bush I passed, was it the type of material or do all ghillie suits do that?
thanks,Cam

Hi Cam,
The BDU ghillie jacket and pants are essentially the same as what the people in the military make. In fact, many of them order those suits and then modify it.
The other suits are built on lighter clothing, mesh or netting. While they are not are durable as the military ones they are lighter and allow more airflow for comfort in warm weather.
All ghillie suit materials will catch on twigs and bushes. The main difference is will the material get pulled out or with it stay in place and snap the twig. You need strong netting and good knots to keep the ghillie material on your suit when you walk through that type of stuff.

Hi, i have a ghillie poncho that i bought from a military surplus store, its made of lightweight netting. The problem is i cant crawl around in it, because it doesnt completely cover the backs of my legs, theres about a foot of uncovered area, and i need to be able to lie down, so what should i do?
By Johnny on Jan 19, 2009
Johnny,
You can purchase a small ghillie kit and attach an extra 6 inches of netting onto the bottom and then attach the thread to it to make the poncho longer.

Question:
Do you usually wear commercial ghillie suits, or are the ones you use “homemade”?
Just curious

That ghillie is similar to the stealthsuit paintball suit in the link below. It’s a lightweight mesh shell with synthetic sewn directly onto the shell.

ya i prob will this seems like a solid site man, is a rifle cover the same as a wrap i kno i prob sound like an idiot but im a first time ghillie buyer lol
By First time ghillie buyer on Apr 15, 2009
The rifle cover is an 4′ elastic band with synthetic thread tied to it. It should be fine for you unless your gun is very big.
The rifle wraps we sell are a bit larger and thicker. They are made of 6in x6ft netting with thread tied to them.
By Ghillie Suit Clothing on Apr 15, 2009
ill will try to buy a new rifle wrap when i get some more money im only 15 and i spent all of it on the ghillie suit and a new guitar lol

By First time ghillie buyer on Apr 15, 2009
i was wandering what type of ghillie suit i should get i want somthing i could crawl in for p.ball and covers everything, the feild we play on is half woodland and grass, the woods haves dirt and grass paths with trees and shrubs, and the feild is green grass about foot to half a foot tall what type and color, should i get?
By paintballman on Jun 8, 2009
It’s difficult to say without seeing the colors but I think the woodland pattern should be fine since your tall grass is also green.

The suit I have now is made up of string. Looks good but is worthless when crawling or walking through thick brush or briars. EVERYTHING clings to the string. The string bets all matted up. I saw a suit once that was made up of flat strips of what looked like thin matte vinyly sewn on the netting suit. This looked great and did not attract any twigs or briars as it made no noise brushing up againist bushes.
By DEPUTYDOG13 on Sep 3, 2009
i bought a 70 ghillie from sportsman’s guide. looks like a decent piece. One issue is that it comes inside out, very bunched up and all the strings are extremely tangled. I started straightening them but occasionally strings get pulled out because they are sewn directly to the mesh. What would be a good method to untangle? would wetting the synthetic material make it less cohesive to itself? definetly buying my next suit from you. This is my first suit and i could have used a more specific style. Amateur. Thanks alot for your time.

Ghillie Suits: Jute or Synthetic Leaf?
The comparison is of two different animals; the more traditional jute/burlap suits are considered by many as the ultimate in camouflage, but are often very heavy and uncomfortable to wear, especially in hotter weather when the layered material holds in your body heat. Plus there is always fear of that dreaded spark and being engulfed in flames. And then you have mesh suits of varying patterns like Real Tree with 3D Leaf and sometimes with the added benefit of scent-lock and bug protection. Their drawback is an inability to add vegetation to enhance one’s concealment in a changing environment, but are notably lighter and easier to don, more comfortable to wear over extended periods.
How do the two suits compare in the field, hunting or on actual combat operations?
