Ghillie suits have been used in the military for quite some time.  The military ghillie suits are different than the types that hunters, airsoft and paintballers use.  The are generally more durable and built on a set of Army Combat Uniforms (ACUs) or Battle Dress Uniforms (BDUs).

When built on BDUs the ghillie suits can be made to have accessible pockets on the jacket and pants.  In addition, reinforcement padding can be sewn to the elbow and knee area to make it more comfortable when prone and increase its durability.

Some military ghillie suits have the jute or burlap thread sewn directly onto the uniforms instead of attached to netting.  While the military primarily uses natural jute thread, there seems to be a shift to go towards the lighter synthetic thread.  The ghillie suits that have netting attached to the uniform have an advantage of being easier to insert natural vegetation into.

While a ghillie suit cannot make you completely invisible, it can conceal you enough to give you a greater tactical advantage.  To make a military style ghillie suit, one can purchase a set of BDUs at any army surplus or military surplus clothing store.  To save money you can purchase a set of used military BDUs as the actual condition of the suit rarely matters.  Just make sure that the BDUs are not torn or show very high wear.  You can find the rest of the materials for building a ghillie suit in our ghillie suit kit area.  The kits come with complete ghillie suit instructions.

Building a military ghillie suit will take time, sometimes as much as 80 hours goes into making a suit.  This is due to the manually tieing of thread onto the netting or the slow process of sewing the jute strands to the uniform.  Before beginning its construction, you should plan the pockets areas, any ventilation areas and any reinforcement areas.  Once these areas are mapped out, you can proceed with the attaching of the jute.
